RCMP, teen injured in incident

At approximately 3:14 p.m. on Feb. 11,  three plain-clothes members of the Wood Buffalo RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) located and attempted to stop a stolen vehicle at the intersection of Hospital Street and

the off ramp of Highway 63 in Fort McMurray. There were three male youths in the stolen vehicle at the time.

During the vehicle stop shots were fired when the vehicle was attempting to escape the scene. One shot struck the 16-year-old male driver who was injured in this officer involved shooting. The other two occupants of the vehicle were not injured.  These two person were arrested at the time and have since been released.

The male was transported to the local hospital and was later after flown to Hospital in Edmonton.  He has suffered serious injuries and is in stable condition. Two officers received minor injuries in this incident. The police officers involved have between two and four years of service.

ASIRT has assumed conduct of the investigation into this officer involved shooting while the RCMP Major Crime Unit from Edmonton has assumed the investigation into the original offense(s).

There was a red mini van present at the time of this incident in addition to other motor vehicles in the area.
