Progress made in Parsons Landing fire investigation
Regional Emergency Services' Fire Prevention Branch Fire Investigators have made progress in the fire investigation at Parsons Landing, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced.
At this point the findings of the investigation are as follows:
- This fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
- The fire originated on the second floor, south facing balcony of the north wing.
- The sprinkler systems worked on all four floors of the building.
- The sprinkler systems were effective in stopping the spread of the fire on the first, second, and third floors. It is important to note that during a fire, only the sprinkler heads in direct proximity to the fire area are designed to activate.
- Insufficient power supply caused some alarm bells in the building not to sound.
Fire Prevention Branch Fire Investigators continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Further details will be released when available.
For information related to specific units or belongings retrieval, residents affected by the fire are reminded to speak with Shelter Canadian Properties Limited property management company at 780-748-4355, as well as with their insurance company.
Evacuees still requiring support, such as shelter or food, can contact Neighbourhood and Community Development during regular business hours at 780-743-7940.
Reception and lodging at school closing today
The reception and lodging facility at École McTavish for those affected by the Parsons Creek Drive fire will be closing this afternoon, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m., the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced.
Evacuees still requiring further information or support can contact Neighbourhood and Community Development during regular business hours at 780-743-7940.
As the reception and lodging facility is demobilizing, there is no further requirement for volunteers. We appreciate the community interest in supporting evacuees and continue to encourage volunteerism in the community.
Residents who have been affected by the fire are advised to speak with Shelter Canadian Properties Limited property management company in regard to their units, at 780-748-4355, as well as with their insurance company. The building owner will be coordinating the retrieval process of personal property for those apartments that are safe to enter later.

School open to students and staff; still accessible to evacuees
Ecole McTavish Junior High Public School will be fully operational to staff and students Tuesday morning with exception of its fine arts wing.
The school, which has been acting as a staging area for evacuees of the Parsons Creek Drive fire was closed to students on Monday to accommodate the need. However, it did remain open to staff.
Staff and students are asked to report to the front of the school Tuesday morning while evacuees and emergency personnel are asked to enter through the fine arts wing on the right side of the building.
"This area will be isolated from staff and students to allow us to get back to business as usual, and provide the needed privacy of those affected by this devastating fire," said Dennis Parsons, superintendent of the Fort McMurray Public School District. "We very much want to welcome our neighbours any way we can, while maintaining normalcy for our staff and students."
