Let’s head into the time tunnel and look back on some of the highlights of the first 10 years 1982-1992.

Former Fort McMurray Oil Baron Jack Maclellan, now playing his final season for the Brown University Bears, has been nominated for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, which is given out to the top hockey player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association south of the border.

It’s 1984 and my wife Diane and I are patiently standing outside a Las Vegas casino waiting in line for a taxi cab. A couple of minutes later, we are next up for a ride.

Suddenly a large man, well-dressed in a white suit, along with a group of loud, but obviously fun-loving people, exits from the casino and approaches the taxi line. Just then the cab pulls up and the valet motions for this group to get into the cab. My wife says to the valet, “Hold a second. We were next?”

I whisper to her in awed tone, “That’s Larry Holmes behind us!”

I just finished watching the flick Red Tails (see C.J. In the Flicks on page 6) which tells the story of the African American pilots of the Second World War, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

It got me thinking about who have been some of our outstanding African American  athletes here in Fort McMurray over the years.
