Recently, I was standing in line waiting for my six-year old’s ballet recital, and I overhead a pair of moms in the line ahead of me talking.
“I hate standing in line for this every year,” one beleaguered mom commented, blowing a sweaty wisp of hair out of her eyes.
“Oh, I know what you mean,” the other replied. “Last year, I was here for two hours.”

I remember well my first journey up Highway 63. In 2002, I was fresh out of university, ready to take on the world with the ink still wet on my newly minted teaching degree. With my Chevy Cavalier packed to the brim, I was headed to Fort McMurray.
Like virtually everyone else here, I came for a job, a chance to man the helm in my very own classroom instead of putting in my time on the substitute teacher list back home in Saskatchewan like so many other newly graduated teachers.

I remember the day my sister bought her minivan.
Even though several years have passed, the event is burned into my memory.
How can I forget it when today, I’ve been forced to eat my words as I walk out of the car dealership, keys in hand, the not-so-proud owner of a brand new minivan of my own?

Another election is upon us, and as usual, my neighbourhood is peppered with brightly-coloured lawn signs swaying in the spring breeze.
I’ve always been a big believer in the democratic process, and I’ve never failed to be disgusted by the low voter turnout and who-gives-a-rat’s attitude of much of the Fort McMurray voting population.
